This super easy air fryer sausage and onions recipe is a great side dish! Also great to serve as an appetizer, or for breakfast or lunch!
This Sausage and Onions recipe calls for a pre-cooked smoked sausage and it can be done in under 10 minutes in an air fryer. You can use raw sausage and pre-cook it in the air fryer before slicing it and will cook more quickly. It’s a crowd-pleaser and a favorite summer meal for picnics or any family gatherings.
4-Ingredients Air Fryer Sausage and Onions
Sausage– Pre-cooked smoked sausage, Smokies, or Kielbasa. You may use raw Italian sausage (pre-cook before slicing) and slice them diagonally about an inch thick.
Onion– white, yellow, or red onion, sliced
Cooking oil– Canola oil, vegetable oil, or Olive oil
Barbecue sauce– Homemade barbecue sauce or you can use your favorite store-bought barbecue sauce.
For the Quick and Easy 4-ingredient Homemade Barbecue Sauce
2 tbsp ketchup
1 tbsp yellow mustard
1 tbsp brown sugar
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
Add soy sauce taste to taste.

How to make Air Fryer Sausage and Onions
Preheat the air fryer to 400℉. Slice the sausage (1 inch thick) and thinly slice the onion so it will be quickly caramelized. Place the sliced sausage and onions in the air fryer basket or baking sheet. Then Drizzle with cooking oil and season with salt and pepper. Toss and make sure to spread to cook evenly.
How long to cook the sausage in the air fryer? Depending on how thick and sausage size you are using, cooking time may vary. Raw sausage will take about 12 to 18 minutes from 375℉ to 400℉. While the pre-cooked smoked sausage (not sliced) will take to cook about 8 to 12 minutes. Sausage (1 inch sliced) will cook for about 4 to 8 minutes.
Air fry the slices of sausage (1 inch thick) and onions in a preheated air fryer for about 4 to 5 minutes.
Meanwhile, make the barbecue sauce. Mix all the 4-ingredient barbecue sauce in a small bowl until well blended.
Add and toss in the air-fried sausage and onions and continue air-frying for about 4 to 5 minutes. If using raw sausage, air fry until cooked through. Garnish with dried or fresh chopped parsley, if desired.
What to serve with Air Fryer Sausage and Onions
It’s wonderful to serve it with Macaroni Salad, corn, roasted potatoes, or roasted vegetables. Also a great pair with these air fryer vegetables.
